Weapon Madness – Round One – Ranged Weapon Contest: 357 Magnum vs Uzi

The last matchup was pretty wild with an almost even amount of people choosing both sides of the fence. While people recognized the fragility of the electric guitar, the silent factor was the ace in the hole. The chainsaw, no matter how a good a body cutter, it was viewed as too much of zombie notifier. Personally I would have selected the electric guitar not for the silent factor but because I would most likely cut my own head off. I can see myself swinging the weapon, hitting a wall, and having it come back right at me. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Melee Weapon Contest: Electric Guitar vs Chainsaw

Wow. Talk about fireworks at the fairground. The last matchup raised a pretty interesting discussion and what I thought was going to be another shutout, turned into a forceful battle of wills. Having learned to shoot with shotguns as a kid and now owning a break-action one myself, I would have taken the pump action, but Dan made an excellent point about the spear: I know that the spear is light and can be used from a distance. It has the ability to double as a prying tool (kind of) and can be used as a makeshift crutch or walking stick when hiking tough terain. Like you said it is a silent weapon Its devastating when combined with a sheild (Spartan style) or you can toss it although … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Ranged Weapon Contest: Spear vs Pump Action Shotgun

We’ve seemed to have entered a place of one sided matchups. As much as the torch could be used as a potentially dangerous zombie killing tool (and people killing as well), everyone decided to go with the baseball bat. I would have done the same although I don’t think my arms would hold up too well With the next matchup, we have a spear versus a pump action shotgun. I think I can imagine how this contest will end, but can someone provide a situation where a spear would be better than the gun? … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Melee Weapon Contest: Flaming Torch vs Baseball Bat

The last matchup wasn’t so much a matchup, but a list of reasons on why not to use a beanbag gun. The simple answer was that it lacked any killing potential. I think the only real use for the gun would be to create diversions. But here’s the thing: zombies aren’t the most intelligent of beings so I don’t think diversions would work well against them. In any case, the auto shotgun won with an easy majority This next matchup is a flaming torch (as opposed to the British word for flashlight) versus a baseball bat. An easy matchup? You decide. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Ranged Weapon Contest: Semi Auto Shotgun vs Beanbag Gun

The pick axe had an overwhelming victory in that last matchup with only myself and Charlene dissenting from the rest of the site. I will say that while the cordless drill would make a pretty terrible weapon, I’ve worked with enough pick axes in the past to avoid them at all costs. I can’t tell you how many heads I’ve managed to snap off the handle, or my personal exhaustion after a long session. I also like the drill for getting in and out of places while using it to help build a barricade for any buildings. This next matchup puts an auto shotgun versus a beanbag gun. Honestly, I’ve never used a beanbag gun nor have I thought about it, so I’m going to defer adding … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Melee Weapon Contest: Pick Axe vs Cordless Drill

When a rock challenged the .22 rifle, the rifle shot back with a take no prisoners kind of attitude. People overwhelming preferred the long distance killing potential of the .22 rifle over a hand thrown rock. The rifles are light and as Strife26 pointed out on the main blog site, ammo is cheap and light to carry. This next matchup puts a pick axe against a cordless drill. Some might rush to a conclusion on first glance, but I found the more I thought of this matchup, the harder it was to decide. Also, I’ve used both tools rather extensively in the past year which jaded me to both. Which one did I choose? You’ll have to read the next matchup to find … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Ranged Weapon Contest: Rock vs .22 Rifle

The last matchup was an interesting one for sure. Personally, both weapons weren’t the best selections of the batch, and when it came right down to it, most people preferred the pitchfork. If anything, it kept zombies at a distance and that is always a good thing. Mind you, the hedge clippers did get some love. Jennifer had the ingenious idea of disassembling them, and using each blade on its own. Onto the next matchup. This one sounds strange but it should promote some interesting discussion. A rock versus a .22 rifle. Here’s the breakdown: … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Melee Contest: Pitchfork vs Hedge Clippers

The last matchup caused a little confusion which I hope to fix for upcoming matchups. The idea of the bracket is to pit two different weapons against one another to determine the better zombie killer. Some of these matchups may seem lame or really one sided, but that’s due to the randomness of the bracket. (On an aside, I actually like the strange matchups as they promote interesting discussion) The way the bracket works is that one day we have a melee (hand-to-hand) weapons matchup and the next day, we have ranged weapons. While there are times when a ranged weapon might make for an effective melee weapon (and vice versa), the primary judging criteria should be its effectiveness as a ranged weapon. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Throwing Axe vs Bow and Arrow

When the dead starts to rise, the hammer looks to be a safe bet to grab during all the looting. At least, it is certainly better than a dumbbell. Scott liked the dropping potential of the dumbbells, but using it as a weapon wasn’t viewed as a practicality by the community as a whole. That is, unless you get caught in a gym during a zombie apocalypse. Tonight’s matchup is throwing axe versus a bow and arrow. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Hammer vs Dumbbell

Believe it or not, we’ve made it halfway through round one. Looking ahead to round two, you will see that we have many interesting matchups with some clear favorites. The real question of the hour, has the overall tournament winner already competed? Time will tell. Yesterday’s matchup raised a lot of discussion about the use of fire for zombie kills. The general consensus was to avoid the Molotov Cocktail since it would only agitate the problem (flaming zombies) as opposed to eliminating all together. I would have selected the AK because it’s not only great against the dead, but also against other survivors who just may be a bit lustful over my gear. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – AK-47 vs Molitov Cocktail

The last matchup was the equivilent of pitting a puppy against a monster truck. As inventive as the hedge clippers were, they simply could not overcome the elegant cutting beauty of a machete. Mind you, I would pick the machete for the win in this matchup, but I wouldn’t be happy about using it. It only takes one off balance swing to open an opportunity for a zombie bite, and once bitten, there’s no going back. … Read entire article »

Who would have thought a potato gun versus a flare gun would be fireworks at the fairground? It was an excellent discussion. I do agree with Josh being that a lot of people mistook a potato gun as being able to fire just potatoes. It really should have been labeled an air compression gun. Steve had an interesting take, saying: After all the people who chose the flare gun get devoured, I can take their remaining body parts and stick them in my potato gun. I’d imagine that a 200mph femur could take out a small zombie horde … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Potato Gun vs Flare Gun

When push came to shove, nunchucks just couldn’t hold up against a hatchet. People were really turned off by the self damaging potential, but it was also the dual use abilities of the hatchet that made it an attractive choice. Believe it or not, I use a hatchet almost every night and if the zombies were to come knocking on my door, I’d probably use anything else (except nunchucks). Sure, the hatchet has a fine blade, but you only have one swing against a zombie and the old rotter isn’t going to wait for you to pry hatchet out of its skull before it attacks again. … Read entire article »

It is safe to say that the last matchup was a terrible one. In fact, I’d flat out state it if such a statement wouldn’t be an offense to sucky matchups. The majority decided to stick with the bowling ball and although the “strike” potential is pretty high with the undead, it still makes for a terrible weapon. Well, you can’t have everything. … Read entire article »

The last matchup was as close to unanimous as it could get. People just loved the lead pipe. While some acknowledged the dual use possibilities of the 2×4 (such as securing a door), the lead pipe won hands down from its damage potential. Personally, I would have used the 2×4, not so much as a weapon, but as a means to push zombies away from me. … Read entire article »
