Left 4 Dead News-a-Palooza
This past week has brought us a ginormous amount of updates on the popular zombie, cough, infected killing video game, Left 4 Dead. The first big item was the release of The Sacrifice which lets players decide who gets to live and who gets to die. Normally, this choice is a rather easy one for my team. Too far ahead? Too bad. Too far behind. Tough luck. Off to the side and hidden by some shrubbery. Tough titties. Now that there is a achievement to be earned, I imagine there will be epic gunfights to determine who gets to commit suicide. I gave the campaign a spin this morning and found it to be adequate. Is it worth the … Read entire article »

Left 4 Dead 2 Updates
Thanks to Jamie for sending me these news items. It’s been awhile since I played Left 4 Dead 2 on the old XBox. I still enjoy the occasional zombie massacre, but somehow the mutations feature never really gripped. For those who haven’t played the game, the mutations feature basically adds a twist to the gameplay. One mutation had players constantly bleeding while another equipped players with just chainsaws. The latter sounds much cooler than execution. It was like playing the game with a circular saw running in your television. This update sounds pretty cool. Titled Four Swordsmen of the Apocalypse, this mutation equips people with just swords. The sword is probably my favorite weapon in the game, so I’m thinking that … Read entire article »

Zombies in Disneyland
For those of you who own Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, a special treat has come your way by way of an enthusiastic mapper who loves both zombies and Disneyland. I’ve seen some pretty clever maps for Left 4 Dead, but this one is pure gold. The mapper has managed to recreate Disneyland’s Indiana Jones: Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction and I gotta say, having spent many a day at Disneyland (I used to work for Disney’s internet group some time ago) the mapper managed to get the attraction just right. … Read entire article »

Remero on Left 4 Dead
Many thanks to zombie chow Ben for sending me this interview with zombie icon, George Romero. When I first saw the headline of this article, I thought this was going to be Romero baiting clip with Left 4 Dead being the catalyst. But George takes it all in strides. He shrugs off the fast zombies, saying it’s not his zombies. He acknowledges most zombie films these days aren’t even zombie films but rage infected people. For the recent resurgence of zombies, George gives all the credit to video games and as much as he respects the genre, he will never stick his toe in video game development. As he says, “I’m just too darn slow”. … Read entire article »

The Passing is Imminent
Great news for those of you who have pining for something new and different in the Left 4 Dead 2 universe. Valve just posted on the official Left 4 Dead blog that the upcoming DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, otherwise known as The Passing will be released next week. Good times, indeed. For those out of the loop, The Passing is a piece of episodic content whereby the old survivors from Left 4 Dead 1 meet the new survivors of Left 4 Dead 2 and in the process, manage to get someone killed. From what I’ve read about the content, players will be put in a situation where one of the players must sacrifice their life for the rest of the team. I’m not … Read entire article »

Left 4 Dead: A Whole New Different Kind of Choice
If there we a game studio I would work for in a second, it would be Valve. Since the release of Half Life, they have been producing awesome games. My best friend puts it best. “Valve,” he says. “Is the only game company that I’d buy a sixty dollar game without reading a review or even reading what the game was about.” So Valve, if you need some writing help, you can find me over here … I’m just saying ;) … Read entire article »

Is Left 4 Dead 2 Team Versus Broken?
Let me kick off this post to say that I’m not the best Left 4 Dead player out there, but I’m hardly the worse. I know my way around the maps, can swing a frying pan like the best of them, and I know when to duck and when to run. My buddies are also fairly decent at the game and while we are still working to coordinate our attacks as the infected, we can typically handle our own as survivors give or take one of us who likes to break from the pack now and then. Yet, whenever we play a team versus match, the difficulty spectrum is all over the charts. In fact, there are no charts which can make for hair pulling mouth foaming frustration. … Read entire article »

Video Footage from Upcoming Left 4 Dead DLC
Many thanks to the soon be dead zombie hunter, Jamie (today is Tuesday night fights, after all). Rock, Paper, Shotgun has posted a couple of videos for the upcoming downloadable content for the Xbox and PC. The content takes place over three maps with the old survivors of the original Left 4 Dead giving the new survivors a new mission, and later, a little help. There were some interesting revelations in the video. For one, there’s a new M60 weapon which quite simply turns zombies in oozing piles of meat. Alas, the gun itself has a fixed limit of ammo without any hopes of reloading so it is very much like the chainsaw of ranged weapons. There’s also a golf club to be used as a … Read entire article »

29 Billion Zombies Killed and Counting
Star Trek’s bald headed chick magnet Captain Jean Luc Piccard observed that all life forms have a right to exist no matter how strange the behavior or aggressive the creature towards our species. Of course, Piccard hadn’t encountered the flesh eating undead who would delightfully tear him apart limb from limb, but if he had, I’m guessing the number of dead zombies would be higher. As it stands, we should still be proud of our collective 29 billion zombies killed in a span of three months with the release of Left 4 Dead 2. Tom’s Guide has reported the figures from Valve and in doing so, tried to break it down in understandable figures. Like, have you thought how high a stack of 29 billion zombies would reach … Read entire article »

New Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 DLC Coming
I just read this article over at Kotaku which is talking about the new content coming for Left 4 Dead 2. As previously stated, the DLC is known as The Passing in which the old survivors meet the new survivors and they all go out to dinner together. Actually, there isn’t much mentioned except that the survivors meet in the third mission of the DLC whereby they kill a lot of zombies. Once the DLC is released, Valve also plans to release a digital comic which purports to give some explanation of the character’s back story, giving you further motivations to smash Ellis in the face with a shotgun. … Read entire article »

Left 4 Dead 2 Patch En Route
Good news and bad news coming the Valve folks, creators of our favorite zombie killing romp. Well, the good news first is that AI controlled bots will be joining the mix, so if you have a team less than four people, prepare for some digital assistance. They’ve ramped up the AI from walking lobotomy patients to three stooges on banana peels so good news there. There’s also a ton of other little fixes that don’t plague the game but make for a better gameplay experience overall. … Read entire article »

The Evolution of Left 4 Dead 2
I really have no idea how I stumbled into this interview. One minute I was banging on my keyboard, knocking out a work project, the next minute I was reading Valve’s design process with my tongue dangling out the side of my mouth. And boy oh boy – this is an interesting read. It’s titled, “Why Ellis is Valve’s favorite character” but that’s only one section of a larger article. On an aside, I used to enjoy Ellis, but now I can’t stand him. I don’t know what it is. Maybe as I get older, I have less patience for long rambling stories that serve no purpose. I don’t know, but whenever he breaks into a monologue, I wish I could smash him with … Read entire article »

Left 4 Dead Getting Patched Up
Valve, creator of the uber popular zombie kill fest Left 4 Dead 2, is in the process of making some updates to the game that might make the game easier or harder depending on who you play. They will be removing the special infected auto-spawn feature during the climatic moments of a campaign so instead of jumping right into the action, you’ll have to find a location hidden from a player’s view. This could make things difficult for the survivors. There have been countless times where I have spat in frustration at my auto-spawn location sinceit involved me charging through an open area. With organized teams, this could be an ace in the hole. Sometimes, waiting for your buddies to spawn to coordinate attacks can … Read entire article »

Left 4 Dead 2′s Cutting Room Floor: The Leaker
Kotaku is running a short article about the special infected that almost came to be. The Leaker. Yes, one wonders if Valve has been working in video games too long when all their character names have something to do with bodily fluids laced with innuendo. I can’t say how many Spitter jokes I have endured since the game’s release last November. About that said Leaker, here’s a snip from the article: “With The Leaker, the idea was a kind of Boomer that could take damage, and shoot out spouts of goo. And you could plant yourself and explode – be this walking bomb,” Faliszek told OXM. … Read entire article »

8 Bit Left 4 Dead Released
Remember the days when video games consisted of only a few dimensions and a boat load of lives? It was a far more innocent age when 8-bit video gaming was the one eyed man in the valley of the blind. Nintendo was the defacto ruler of living room. Now, imagine if Valve Software were transported back to those simpler times and told to recreate Left 4 Dead for the Nintendo Entertainment System. One such enterprising person did just that and man, it looks pretty hard. All the specials are represented although the I didn’t see the tank in the YouTube video. Here’s the description from the blog: … Read entire article »
