FearNet’s Seven Essential George Romero Films Without Zombies

Believe it or not, although George Romero has become synonymous with zombie films, he actually has directed several other movies that have nothing to do with zombies. FearNet has compiled a list of the seven Romero films that are worth watching. I will say my favorite Romero non-zombie film but is actually a zombie film is The Crazies (which is on the list). Sure, it’s getting a remake (what isn’t these days) which has garnered zero interest from me because the original film really tapped a vein about how people felt about the government. It’s a great film , indicative of its time. The seventies was the hangover after the peace movement when people became disillusioned with their government. Vietnam and Watergate were sucker punches to … Read entire article »

Happy Birthday, George Romero

From A World on Fire’s zombie loving community, I’d like to extend wonderful happy birthday greetings to George Romero who turns seventy years young today. I’ve linked up his twitter feed in case you’d like to personally send him birthday wishes as did I link a show of Wait Wait Don’t Me where George plays “Not My Job”. It’s a pretty funny listen. Here are some interesting tidbits about his life I gleaned from Wikipedia: Romero was born in New York City to a Cuban-American father and a Lithuanian-American mother. His father worked as a commercial artist. Romero attended Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University. After graduating in 1960, he began his career shooting short films and commercials. One of his early commercial films, a segment for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood … Read entire article »

Fearnet’s Zombie Fest

It’s beginning to look at a lot like zombies in here. And thank god, because this Thursday is a rather special one for one person out there. Good old George Romero is turning seventy which is, from what I hear, the new thirty. To celebrate George’s birthday, Fearnet is planning a lot of zombie related content. From the article: … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Facebook Page and Official Site

Web Sheriff, who appears to be working with George Romero as well as Magnet (the film’s distributor) wrote a bunch of information on the main site today that you might find interesting. For one, there is an official website for Survival of the Dead, but as far as official websites go, there’s not a whole lot there. It’s primarily a link to the Survival of the Dead facebook page followed by a press release. The facebook page has only three hundred members at this point so let’s do George a favor and jack up those numbers. Believe it or not, there’s already a funny review on it which states: … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Release Date Confirmed

If you’ve been sitting on the edge of you chair, wondering when Romero’s next film is set to hit the big time, wonder no more for the news is in. Bloody Disgusting has just released the details for the upcoming movie’s release. From the article: Magnet has locked down a VOD, Amazon and Xbox Live premiere for April 30, with plans to open in limited theaters on May 28th. Out of curiosity, how do you guys plan on watching it? And how cool is this that you have an option?! I gotta say, the news is slightly disappointing. I love the fact that you will be able to watch the film on an Xbox or through Amazon’s video on demand service (hello Roku!), but what kind of sucks … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Video Cover

I just bumped into a post from zombie news reporting site, Buy Zombie which shows the cover artwork for the next George Romero opus, Survival of the Dead. I’ve cropped out most of it in an effort to build suspense, but I think you may be disappointed. I don’t know what bothers me about this cover. Maybe it the gritty looking background or maybe it’s the female zombie on the left who looks to have a sinus infection. It’s not terrible by any means. It’s just … meh. If I were thumbing through the DVD aisle over at Best Buy and I bumped into this movie, I’d probably pick it up with a half squint, wondering the torments of being a zombie with a … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Gets Release Date (kind of)

Here’s some breaking news which doesn’t really say a whole lot. George Romero’s twitter feed which has been dormant for months, tweeted about a set release date of Surivival of the Dead. Clicking on the Variety link reveals that Magnet (the distributor) has set a spring date, so keep your weekends free between April 21st to June 21st. The other interesting thing to note is that the movie will be used to sell an upcoming VOD (video on demand) service that should be debuting soon. … Read entire article »

Buy Zombie’s Romero Zombie Review

Buy Zombie, an excellent source of zombie news and events, is running a feature right now about the evolution of our undead counterparts from Night of the Living Dead all the way through Land of the Dead. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in it, specifically related to Land of the Dead. I must say, I only saw the movie once so I missed a lot of the subtle details. From the article: It was also during this movie that we get the characterization of yet another zombie character known as Big Daddy, who is like Bub 2.0 where he tries to act like a car station mechanic but regular people still see him as a dead person. … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Finds a Distributor

Great news from the Mail Order Zombie. At long last, George Romero’s latest film Survival of the Dead has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures and it will be receive a theatrical release sometime next year. Before the theater release, the film is going to be released as part of a video on demand service (VOD). This might sound strange to some being theaterical releases always lead the pack. In this case, it is a new on demand service so the developers obviously want to make a rather big splash with Romero’s latest film. I didn’t there was any doubt that this latest film would find a distributor. Even if there were no one bought it and Romero and company decided to sell it out of … Read entire article »

Romero Talks About Zombies

In this older interview, Romero talks up his latest film. He goes into the history of his zombies, noting that the word zombie didn’t appear in his work until Dawn of the Dead. He seems to be having a great time with this latest release although he seems somewhat subdued in this interview. I gotta say he looks a little strange without his glasses. But enough about hype. We need a good old fashioned release date. George A Romero talks about premiering Survival of the Dead (youtube.com … Read entire article »

George Lucas and George Romero … Same or Different?

Some time ago, a person who shall remain anonymous on a rather popular zombie forum compared George Romero with George Lucas, saying Romero peaked a long time ago with the epic Dawn of the Dead. The idea was that Romero started to fade with Day of the Dead (like Lucas on Jedi), then faded even further with Land of the Dead, until he ultimately screwed the pooch with Diaries of the Dead. Hence, the two different men with the same first names are equal. Here’s the thing … Diaries of the Dead was a failure on a lot of levels, but I can respect that failure because Romero was doing something different. He was telling a movie from a first person perspective. He was clearly out … Read entire article »

More News for Romero’s Next Film

I just bumped into this article published by Reuters about Romero’s upcoming film, “Survival of the Dead”. It give a little more information about the plot and a bit more insight into Romero’s thought process. In it, he says: “I wasn’t looking at Iraq and saying, well, lets make a movie about Iraq,” Romero told reporters on Wednesday. It’s much more about man’s underlying inability to forget enmity, forget their enemies even long after they’ve forgotten what started the conflict in the first place. I think that part of the problem is that nobody looks at both sides of any issue, it’s automatically: I’m on this side or I’m on that side.” There’s also the summary of Variety’s review of the film. The verdict … … Read entire article »

George Romero’s Twitter Feed

I got to admit, I’ve never been a fan of Twitter. I first heard of it during the summer of 2007 and I thought it sounded a bit like an abbreviated blog. I wasn’t impressed. Now, two years down the road, I’m just starting to pay attention to it. I find that it’s a great resource for reporting live events, but outside of that arena, I’d rather read a blog. The one thing I dislike about twitter is the very reason it is so successful … the character limit. Sure, it forces people to get to the point (always a good thing), but it also creates bizarre grammatical and spelling monstrosities that make me shiver to my core. Mind you, I’m not a … Read entire article »
