Wasteland of America
After the virus hits and ninety-nine percent of humanity is relegated to compost, there will be a few enterprising survivors combing through the wasteland doing what we’ve always done for millions of years – survive. There is a strange fascination in viewing a world whereby we no longer reside. I have no idea why we like to see our abandoned buildings litter the countryside like long forgotten tombstones. On a personal note, it is deeply painful to see a place you love go apocalyptic. My college closed after two hundred years and visiting the campus not to long ago felt like I myself were a wanderer from the wastes. That said, it is quite interesting to see other places dilapidated from time and neglect. Science fiction website io9 … Read entire article »

Surviving an Apocalypse
Believe it or not, surviving the zombies might be the easy part of a zombie apocalypse. Surviving the actual apocalypse itself is where things get hard. With scant resources, essential items such as food, bullets, and medicine will be the new currency. And those who don’t feel like paying will try and take it for themselves. Fear not, io9 wrote a post-apocalyptic primer to help you get over the growing pains of getting used to a world where human life is but spit on the bottom of the boot. … Read entire article »

Riding the Flood
According to scientists, if we don’t stop our production of CO2, the ice caps will eventually melt, flooding all of our coastal cities. Though this might be a downer, we will do what we have done for millions of years – adapt. io9 is running an interesting series of photos that depict a world half submerged. Although the photos aren’t apocalyptic as you might expect, they do depict another world where life is lived not far removed from the water. Think of Waterworld minus the Costner and the gills. Times Square Still Shines, Even After the Flood (io9.com … Read entire article »

Nuke’em from Orbit. It’s the Only Way to be Sure
When I lived in Glendale, California – just a ten minute drive from downtown Los Angeles – I often wondered if I would be able to survive a direct nuclear blast in LA. I figured if I positioned myself between LA and one of of the many mountains in the area, I would be all right. Thankfully, none of my theories were tested, but now, I can get a pretty good idea with megat0n’s nuclear simulator. In a word, I would have been screwed. This sim is a mash up with google maps that projects the blast zone as well as the area of fallout. You can select a simple suitcase nuclear weapon all the way to the Soviet Union’s uber Tsar Bomba. “Tsar Bomba? … Read entire article »

Power Outage, or Zombie Apocalypse?
Of course when your write about zombies every day of the week, it should be no surprise when they turn up in places that don’t have them. I stumbled onto this story on io9.com which is actually about a power grid failure in Brazil and the possible implications for the states. But I just couldn’t take my eyes off that photo. Imagine if the undead did rise, and people were wiped off the streets to be replaced with flesh eating corpses. You can imagine cities would look something like this. Tall black structures with mere dots of lights indicating survivors or the outbreak of fires. And to tell you the truth, if I had managed to survive such an apocalypse, it wouldn’t be the corpses … Read entire article »

See You in 2013? Maybe Not
As you know, the world is supposed to end in the year 2012 according to Mayan calender. If I were a betting man, I would double down that we make it to 2013. Then again, according to io9.com, we probably won’t. They list seven different ways that the world can end. I think we all would like to have a zombie apocalypse but don’t be surprised if a boring old piece of solar driftwood crashes into the ocean, wiping out all life on the planet. Actually, if you want a very sobering look at all the ways we can be eradicated as a species, I highly suggest you check out A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Byrson. I hid under my bed for a … Read entire article »

Umbrella Corporation at it Again
The key way to minimize risk in business is to diversify your investments. Let’s take the Umbrella Corporation. Sure, they are excellent at creating unstoppable flesh eating zombies, but they decided to branch out into other pursuits such developing large sinkholes under towns. Knowing the Umbrella brand has been tarnished as of late because of some pesky video game series, they decided to enter this new venture under the name, I&W Trucking. And yes, hilarity ensues. At least, for the people not living on a time bomb. The scary thing is that I’m not making this up. At least, not the sinkhole part. Oil industry sinkhole threatens to swallow city (mnn.com … Read entire article »

io9′s Scariest Post-Apocalyptic Movie
When I saw this headline, my mind cycled through all the various different post-apocalyptic movies. Was is it The Last Man on Earth or The Quiet Earth? When I clicked on the link and discovered that it was a Roger Corman production, I realized io9′s tongue was planted firmly in its cheek. I’ve never heard of this Corman picture, but that doesn’t surprise me. The guy was a B movie powerhouse, producing enough sci-fi/horror to cover all of Manhattan in at least three feet of cheese (don’t even try to figure that metaphor out). In this tour-de-force, the army gasses the population killing off everyone over the age of twenty five. The concept sounds intriguing but this Roger Corman we’re talking about. He’s one step … Read entire article »

Boderlands Zombie DLC Coming Soon
If you are a gamer and you love to shoot things, do yourself a favor and pick yourself up a copy of Borderlands. It’s wonderful post-apocalyptic game that involves gunning down psychos and running over frothing pig-dogs. Some time ago, it was announced that a zombie pack would be released for the game, and now it looks like it’s been slated for November 24th for ten bucks. About the pack: The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned features “ferocious brain-eating zombies, carnivorous Were-Skags and more,” if that’ll get you to venture into the Borderlands again later this month. Nothing better than zombie roadkill :) Borderlands’ Undead DLC Coming Nov. 24 (kotaku.com … Read entire article »

Post Apocalyptic Disneyland
io9 is having a lot of fun today with the apocalypse. Although it is titled “Post Apocalyptic Disney World” there is one of picture of the great amusement park in ruins. The rest of the pictures detail a whole bunch of famous landmarks in various states of decay. Personally, the most interesting apocalyptic site I have ever visited was the torn up tracks of a train in the San Gabriel Mountains. The tracks led to the cement remnants of a hotel that overlooked Pasadena. By the time the train stopped its run, it had carried an estimated three million people up the mountain to the hotel. Standing in the empty foundation with nary a soul in sight, it has hard believe such people even … Read entire article »

Post Apocalyptic America
A strange thing happened this past September. The small town of Pitcher, Oklahoma withered and died. On September 1st, the city disappeared from all maps, and all that remains of it today are dust spattered structures lining the cracked asphalt streets. No one lives in Pitcher because the town is a death trap. The city ceased, according to Wikipedia, due in large part to the removal of large amounts of subsurface material during mining operations. Many of the city’s structures have been deemed in imminent danger of caving in. … Read entire article »

Catacombs of the Dead
Looking at Digg today, I saw this great article about the dark catacombs underneath Paris. As in, the catacombs featured in World War Z where an unending fight against the dead took place. The pictures are pretty awesome. Dark shadows cast against a naked rock housing the remains of the forgotten dead. This looks like a great place to visit. Just bring a flashlight, extra batteries, and a shotgun. Pump action, of course. Exploring the Sinister Catacombs of the City of Light (environmentalgraffiti.com … Read entire article »

The Walking Dead
Some time in 2003, a zombie comic book graced the newsstands titled, “The Walking Dead”. It started a lengthy series which continues to this day. The comic has been in the news lately because AMC has been working to get it adapted as television series which is currently being helmed by Frank Darabont – best known for directing The Shawshank Redemption. I don’t know anything about the series except that is seems to have a pretty hardcore following behind it. Cruising through the web, I managed to find the first episode hosted online. The series starts like 28 Days Later. Police officer Rick wakes up in a hospital, having been in a coma for the past three weeks. He is shocked to find the hospital in … Read entire article »

Abandoned Cities
Ever wanted to know what a city would look like after the apocalypse? There’s a great article over at WebUrbanist aptly titled, “7 Abandoned Cities and Places in Asia”. Some of this stuff is downright creepy like the monastery in Cambodia, surrounded by landmines. There’s even an amusement park tossed in for kicks. The amusement park might be kind of fun if you had a few too many beers, then felt like riding a structurally degrading roller coaster. On an aside, I was fortunate to graduate a college that soon went out of business in the year 2000. I can’t express how depressing it was to head back to the campus and see a bunch of derelict buildings boarded up and tagged with graffiti. … Read entire article »

Post-Apocalyptic Sydney
If you haven’t seen the news, an unprecedented dust storm has engulfed good old Sydney, Austrailia, turning the beautiful city into an post-apocalyptic wasteland.
