Movie Review: Survival of the Dead
Here’s an old movie review I wrote before my extended vacation. If you are interested in seeing Survival of the Dead, it’s currently streaming on Netflix with plenty of clips available on Hulu. Some time ago in the quaint state of Pennsylvania, a group of young filmmakers had the idea of creating a new type of horror movie. They all pitched in five hundred bucks and formed a company called Latent Image. Their idea centered around flesh eating corpses. A young filmmaker named George Romero was tasked with writing and directing it. They shot the film in a little farmhouse and called it Night of the Flesh Eaters which was later named to Night of the Living Dead by the distributor. Little did … Read entire article »

Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide – Chopper Chicks in Zombietown
If you are looking to get you hands on a good zombie movie, but you don’t know what to see, do yourself a favor and pick yourself up a copy of Glenn Kay’s excellent book, Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide. In it, Glenn covers the wide expanse of zombie movies starting with the genre’s roots back with White Zombie and continues to review zombie movies until the book’s publication (2008). Glenn pretty much covers everything even remotely zombie related such as movies that aren’t even technically “zombie movies” but might contain walking dead people. Well, thumbing through the book, I pulled up a review of a classic that I missed while in highschool. Had I known about this tour-de-force, I imagine I would be quoting … Read entire article »

Dead Snow – Kill Me Before the Snow Melts
I gotta say, when I first head about this movie, I think I did a cartwheel sitting down. It’s one thing to have regular zombies, but Nazi zombies? I was sold. Hardcore. Give me two copies, I said. Hell, give me three. I was sure to be blown away. How wrong was I. Dead Snow tells the story of a group of medical students who travel to some distant cabin in the woods to drink lots of beer and have lots of sex. During the middle of one late night party, a strange man shows up at the door and tells them an old story about Nazis and curses and how these dang nabbit kids are all idiots for not knowing about a fifty year … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Ponyo – A Post Apocalyptic Children’s Story
Bringing children and the apocalypse together is a risky business, especially if the children are less than four years old. After all, apocalyptic stories can depict some pretty awful situations that would leave a pretty strong imprint on a young mind. God … I can remember seeing the end of Jaws when I was four years old and the image of Quint spitting out a mouthful of blood as the shark drags him into the ocean haunted me well into my teens. I also remember seeing the end of the Shining where a torrent of blood spills from the elevators and that image also stayed with me. Yes, I grew up in an age when Sesame Street and Friday the 13th shared the same time spot … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Avatar
Since my daughter was born two years ago, going to see a movie is now a big deal. There’s babysitting to organize for a large block of time. Just getting in the door sets us back twenty bucks, so we eat beforehand and smuggle in snacks under the watchful eyes of the cinema police. If we’re meeting friends, multiply this process times two and you can see why I rarely see movies in the theater these days. And when do I see one, it had better be good. So was Avatar worth all the time, planning, and headaches? Absolutely. From the moment I stumbled into my seat in the darkened IMAX theater, I was sucked into a story about a marine who discovers … Read entire article »

Horror Yearbook’s Top Ten Horror Flicks of 2009
Popular blood letting blog known as Horror Yearbook posted its top ten horror movies of 2009 and would you be surprised to learn that there were zombies in the midst? Actually, some of you in the room may find this list to be a little controversial especially with Dead Snow making it so high. I have yet to see the movie, but from talking to other zombie lovers out there, it sounds like a high octane ‘meh’ production. The list also includes Zombiegirl and of course, Zombieland. … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Chemical 12-D
If you think a film only seven minutes long wouldn’t be worth your time, then it would be a sure bet that you haven’t seen Chemical 12-D. There is not a moment wasted in this short. Each moment builds upon the next until we discover the true effect of this mysterious chemical. I wrote about this film some time ago, and I was fortunate to be contacted by director Mac Elridge and director of photography, Dave Wagenaar. Both were kind enough to set up a screening of the film and I have to say, it knocked my socks off. It’s one of those films that sticks with you long after the credits have rolled and the theater emptied. The story takes place in the aftermath of some … Read entire article »

Zombie Command Reviews Survival of the Dead
ZC Barry over at Zombie Command managed to get an early look at the Survival of the Dead and posted a full on review without spoilers. Long story short, it gets a hardy recommendation. It is his first Romero recommendation in the past twenty years. That being said, ZC Barry informs readers not to expect old school Romero. Here’s a pretty telling paragraph: That said, beware that Romero does move his zombie world forward and the zombies are smarter than they have been before. They are able to ride horses, post mail and are much less dangerous than previously; it’s almost as if Romero himself doesn’t take the genre seriously but forgets that without the backdrop of his films then parodies are much less likely to work. Romero … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Zombiemania
Like them or not, zombies are everywhere. They lurk in our literature. They crawl through our movies. They have even stormed our once safe city streets. If an age could be described by a monster, we would be living in the age of the zombie. Zombiemania is a documentary released this year, I believe, that examines our recent fascination with the undead. All the major players make an appearance with George Romero himself giving a pretty lengthy interview. I gotta say, the Romero bits were awesome. He talks how he lost the copyright off Night of the Living Dead, ending the subject with a warm heartfelt laugh. “Hurts now,” some stupid person probably told George back in 1968, “but don’t worry. One day you’ll … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Undead or Alive
The movie opens with the famed Native America, Geronimo, casting an ancient curse on the white people who have invaded his homeland. Moments later, a kind faced zombie bites the head off a chicken, then follows up the meal by snacking on his wife and daughter. We never find out how this man became “cursed”, but it matters little. It’s all about the zombies and not how they came to be. Welcome to Undead is a zomedy/western released in 2007 starring SNL’s Chris Kattan and Desperate Houswives’ James Denton. Denton plays a guy named Elmer who is on the run from his military unit. He finds a backwater town and within moments of entering the saloon, he gets himself into a fight with an overly sensitive … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Four of the Apocalypse
Before director Lucio Fulci was making movies about zombies wrestling sharks, he made a small film titled, Four of the Apocalypse. Based on a series of short stories, Four of the Apocalypse follows the journey of four people as they travel across a bleak western landscape in search of sanctuary in the nearby Carson City. This is not your typical western. There are no kind strangers with amazing shooting skills. This a movie where the good guys are shot in the back, and left to die alone in an unforgiving landscape. The movie starts with the four strangers tossed into jail. Stubby is a wealthy gambler who dresses to kill. Bunny is a pregnant prostitute. Clem is the town drunk and Bud is a … Read entire article »

Movie Review: Zombieland
Zombieland has been often called the American version of the Shaun of the Dead. This is true insomuch as the movie is quite funny and that it also contains zombies. Otherwise, the movie couldn’t be any more different. And for that, I was very grateful. The movie is about a young man nicknamed Columbus who has managed to survive a zombie apocalypse not through brute strength or cunning marksmanship, but rather, a fanatical devotion to his list of rules. These rules are quite funny, but also, a bit self aware as if Columbus had seen a gazillion zombie movies and was taking notes. It is those rules that save his life over and over again. He teams up with a very skeptical Tallahassee (played by Woody … Read entire article »

Movie Review: The Host
Years ago, I remember seeing a thirty second spot on television whereby a large tentacle shot out of the water and wrapped around a screaming little girl. The remainder of the spot showcased screaming crowds of people running from a gigantic fish-like creature as it wreaked havoc. It looked to be the Mount Everest of cheese. I made sure to put it on my Netflix queue, thinking I would need a good laugh sometime in the future. Fast forward to a few weeks ago. Sick and on the couch, I discovered that The Host appeared in my instant watch queue. I pressed play, looking forward to this good laugh that I had squirreled away years before. I got something completely different. The Host is a very … Read entire article »

Night of the Living Dead
I’m currently in the process of building out a media portion of the site, so I figured I’d start with the beloved classic that really got me into the zombie thing from the start. Oh yeah … Night of the Living Dead. I remember walking into a Blockbuster when I was in high school and I saw it for sale for only five bucks. Mind you, this during a time when new VHS tapes cost video stores around ninety bucks a pop, and used video tapes went somewhere between fifteen and twenty bucks. I didn’t know anything about the movie, I just saw that it had a cool cover and was cheap. I loved every single second of it. The media page is still under development, … Read entire article »

Movie Review: The Stink of Flesh
David Brin, author of the awesome book “The Postman” (terrible terrible terrible movie), once said that he didn’t like post-apocalyptic fiction being it generally boiled down to “wish-fulfillment fantasies for little boys”. This movie would fit his description right down to final shot of the film of a thirteen year old boy taking the hand of a nymphomaniac as they both stare into the, er, zombie-set. The Sink of Flesh was made in 2005, and it is currently available for viewing on Netflix’s streaming service. The movie focuses on Matool. He isn’t your average zombie hunter. For a Mexican, he’s given a bizarre first name which actually references a fictional island in the Caribbean that was overrun by zombies in Lucio Fulci’s superior “Zombie”. … Read entire article »
