What Would You Do? – Day Three: Things Get Worse
I was surprised to read more people than I imagined would still go to work while an infection spread, but putting myself in the same situation, I’d probably be at work myself unless my daughter was too sick for daycare. I write this having undergone the sickest year of my existence so maybe my thoughts would be a little different a year from now or a year ago. But the interesting thing … even at the end of days, I’d still be concerned about my sick time off work. Of course, one doesn’t know it’s the end of days otherwise things would play out much different. … Read entire article »

Weapon Madness – Round One – Melee Weapon Contest: Fire Extinguisher vs Shotgun Butt
Not a big surprise, but a lot of people liked the idea of putting A LOT of space between them and the walking dead. Yet, people still recognized the killing power of the .22 pistol. Sure it may lack a lot of stopping power, but as many stated, it would just take a simple shot to the head to kill a zed. The bullet goes in but can’t get out, hence, you play pinball in a zombie’s brain. Be that as it may, the scoped rifle took home the gold while the .22 pistol won some lovely parting gifts. … Read entire article »

What Would You Do? – Day Two: The Plague Spreads
There were some interesting answers to the last question. For those who forgot – the question of the hour was determine what you would do if you were going to a bar with your best friend and he or she showed signs of an infectious flu (possibly fatal) going around. Mind you, you have no idea that is flu has anything to do with zombies. Dan decided to go with the subtle route in his post: ask him to make a pitstop at the nearest fast food joint saying I need to get some food in my stomach before we start to get hammered. From there I’m doing something pretty similar to strife from there on out, I’m texting my sister to get me the Fuck outta there! … Read entire article »

Plants Versus Zombies Hits the iPhone
In the past month, I’ve heard a lot about the release of Plants Versus Zombies. There’s been plenty written on the subject, comparing the release with the oft reviled Duke Nukem Foreever. Evidently the folks at PopCap Games are better managers then Duke Nukem people because the game was just released to the app store for a ridiculous price of … and I can’t believe that I’m writing this … three bucks. That is a ridiculous. … Read entire article »

What Would You Do? – Day One: The Initial Outbreak
Waiting for your best friend to pick you up for a night of beers with good friends, you catch a news item informing of a strange new strain of flu that appears to be infecting neighboring cities at an alarming rate. The flu is very contagious with symptoms appearing only hours after the initial exposure. Symptoms include running noses, bloodshot eyes, and strange leisions appearing on the surface skin area. Some theorized the flue strain to be ultimately lethal, but it is only speculation. Doctors warn the patients should not go to the hospital, but rather stay at home so they don’t infect anyone else. … Read entire article »

My Top Five Scariest Movies
Years ago, I remember watching the movie Aliens for the first time with my brother and some friends. During one particular scary moment, my brother jumped off the couch, flailing both his arms and legs as he vomited a stream of curses. His terror dance was so elaborate that it rained for weeks afterwords. I probably would have joined him but my nails were buried deep in the couch. We get this reaction from our mother who gained some local fame after screaming herself into exhaustion during a screening of the movie Jaws. In short, horror movies can be a big deal in my family. Below are my list of the top five horror movies that almost scared me back into oblivion. While these … Read entire article »

What Would You Do? – Introduction
We’ve all seen the movies. We’ve all read the books. We’ve all immersed ourselves in fictional apocalypses with one eye on the story, and the other on the wheel, meaning … we wonder what we would do if stuck in the same situation. In the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posing apocalyptic scenarios of the zombie kind with the key question … what would you do? My goal is to start at day one and move throughout the blossoming apocalypse. I’ll try and pose a question a day. Your job is simply to answer it. Here’s the kicker … you must answer it honestly. You must close your eyes and put yourself in the imagined situation and tell me what YOU … Read entire article »

Zombie Wedding Cake
This is an oldie but goodie that made the rounds through the intertubes last year. As you know, what is old is new again (unless we’re talking about my car). I posted this cake sometime back but seeing as how I’m in a lazy mood today, I’m pillaging the archives. The cake itself pretty awesome. Who needs a dancing bride and groom when there are chainsaws to be passed out. The spatters of blood along the sides of the cake really make this puppy sparkle. Check it out and despair. When Scholars Go Zombie
Here’s a fun little retrospective on Fulci’s Zombie by a blog over at the entertainment website, Hitfix. The author is undertaking a project to write an essay on a great film per each letter of the alphabet. He’s written about High Plains Drifter, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, and even the highly underrated Joe Vs. the Volcano (which admittedly pukes all over itself at the end). … Read entire article »

The Ultimate Zombie Contigency Plan
As we zombie lovers know, having a good plan for when the dead rise from the graves is critical to surviving the upcoming zombie apocalypse (you know it’s coming … didn’t you?). Some of us have good plans while others need a little work. Hell, some of us have even made a living off selling their zombie plans. In short, it is good to have a plan even if it comes down to pouring mayonnaise on your head when the zombies do decide to eat you. Sara Albro, otherwise known as ZombieGrl12 on Twitter, posted a link on her feed which is fully comprehensive zombie strategy guide. It breaks down the apocalypse into bite size (har har har) chunks so that you might be able to either … Read entire article »

Creepy Dolls
Growing up, my mother loved to collect porcelain dolls. Our house was filled with them which made for a very obvious result during an epic pillow fight one Christmas morning. When I was a freshman in college, I managed to come into an unexpected landfall of money so I decided to buy my mother figurine for Christmas. I was naive in the world of porcelain so I made the mistake of asking a salesman. I should have just washed myself in blood and threw myself in the shark tank. A few hundred dollars shorter, I left with a small polar bear playing with a ball that in retrospect, looked like a twenty five dollar item with a hundred and seventy dollar dumb college student tax. … Read entire article »

Bloody Distusting Talks Clash of the Titans
In the past few months, I’ve avoided talking about the upcoming Clash of the Titans movie. The movie bothers me on a lot of different levels that I really can’t clarify outside of disenfranchised fanboyism. I LOVED the original movie. I remember seeing it in the theater as an eight year old boy and feeling the doors of my imagination get blown off. Perseus, the young son of Zeus, undertakes an epic quest that leads him to the gates of hell, then back again. And while Perseus does a mighty fine job, he does get his ass handed to him. in fact, he’s so wiped out by the end of the movie that Zeus calls a timeout to get our young hero back on … Read entire article »

Werewolves Reloaded
If you’ve been paying attention to your movie monsters this past decade, you will have noticed that zombies won *big* in the last ten years while vampires took a hard nose dive. Why did zombies get the gold? Max Brooks argues that they returned to fashion because of national anxiety of two wars and terrorism. I respectfully disagree. I think the last ten years brought torture porn to the table with movies like Hostel and the like. I can’t really answer that question about the undead other than I like zombies and apocalyptic scenarios. So what about the werewolf genre? By all accounts it has been dead for years. We’ve seen twitches from the Underworld series, but I’d argue those movies were really about … Read entire article »

How to Kill a Mass of Zombies with Style
Talking to a lot of people on this site, I’ve come to learn that everyone has a plan for surviving a zombie apocalypse. That’s part of the fun, isn’t it? I’ve heard all kinds of theories involving a ton of weapons and maybe a prayer or two for good favor. Well, these two fellas managed to come up with their own way of handling the limitless hordes of the dead. Let’s just say it comes with a motor, a concrete road divider, and a couple of spinning blades. Would this work in “real life”? Probably not, but it would sure be fun as hell to try out. … Read entire article »
