Survival of the Dead Featured in April’s Fangoria
Many thanks to Brandon Nichols over at mPRm Public Relations for looping the A World on Fire community on the latest news for George Romero’s next film. Horror magazine Fangoria is doing a lengthy feature on the upcoming film in the April issue before the actual XBox release on May 1st. Ahhh … Fangoria. Brings back memories of my freshman year of college where I had a stack of them on my night stand for late night reading. It made for great nightmare fuel, but it also introduced me to Guillermo del Toro who would later rock my world with The Devil’s Backbone, and then smash it with Pans Labyrinth. … Read entire article »

FearNet’s Seven Essential George Romero Films Without Zombies
Believe it or not, although George Romero has become synonymous with zombie films, he actually has directed several other movies that have nothing to do with zombies. FearNet has compiled a list of the seven Romero films that are worth watching. I will say my favorite Romero non-zombie film but is actually a zombie film is The Crazies (which is on the list). Sure, it’s getting a remake (what isn’t these days) which has garnered zero interest from me because the original film really tapped a vein about how people felt about the government. It’s a great film , indicative of its time. The seventies was the hangover after the peace movement when people became disillusioned with their government. Vietnam and Watergate were sucker punches to … Read entire article »

Happy Birthday, George Romero
From A World on Fire’s zombie loving community, I’d like to extend wonderful happy birthday greetings to George Romero who turns seventy years young today. I’ve linked up his twitter feed in case you’d like to personally send him birthday wishes as did I link a show of Wait Wait Don’t Me where George plays “Not My Job”. It’s a pretty funny listen. Here are some interesting tidbits about his life I gleaned from Wikipedia: Romero was born in New York City to a Cuban-American father and a Lithuanian-American mother. His father worked as a commercial artist. Romero attended Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University. After graduating in 1960, he began his career shooting short films and commercials. One of his early commercial films, a segment for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood … Read entire article »

Fearnet’s Zombie Fest
It’s beginning to look at a lot like zombies in here. And thank god, because this Thursday is a rather special one for one person out there. Good old George Romero is turning seventy which is, from what I hear, the new thirty. To celebrate George’s birthday, Fearnet is planning a lot of zombie related content. Survival of the Dead Facebook Page and Official Site
Web Sheriff, who appears to be working with George Romero as well as Magnet (the film’s distributor) wrote a bunch of information on the main site today that you might find interesting. For one, there is an official website for Survival of the Dead, but as far as official websites go, there’s not a whole lot there. It’s primarily a link to the Survival of the Dead facebook page followed by a press release. The facebook page has only three hundred members at this point so let’s do George a favor and jack up those numbers. Believe it or not, there’s already a funny review on it which states: … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Release Date Confirmed
If you’ve been sitting on the edge of you chair, wondering when Romero’s next film is set to hit the big time, wonder no more for the news is in. Bloody Disgusting has just released the details for the upcoming movie’s release. From the article: Magnet has locked down a VOD, Amazon and Xbox Live premiere for April 30, with plans to open in limited theaters on May 28th. Out of curiosity, how do you guys plan on watching it? And how cool is this that you have an option?! I gotta say, the news is slightly disappointing. I love the fact that you will be able to watch the film on an Xbox or through Amazon’s video on demand service (hello Roku!), but what kind of sucks … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Video Cover
I just bumped into a post from zombie news reporting site, Buy Zombie which shows the cover artwork for the next George Romero opus, Survival of the Dead. I’ve cropped out most of it in an effort to build suspense, but I think you may be disappointed. I don’t know what bothers me about this cover. Maybe it the gritty looking background or maybe it’s the female zombie on the left who looks to have a sinus infection. It’s not terrible by any means. It’s just … meh. If I were thumbing through the DVD aisle over at Best Buy and I bumped into this movie, I’d probably pick it up with a half squint, wondering the torments of being a zombie with a … Read entire article »

Survival of the Dead Gets Release Date (kind of)
Here’s some breaking news which doesn’t really say a whole lot. George Romero’s twitter feed which has been dormant for months, tweeted about a set release date of Surivival of the Dead. Clicking on the Variety link reveals that Magnet (the distributor) has set a spring date, so keep your weekends free between April 21st to June 21st. The other interesting thing to note is that the movie will be used to sell an upcoming VOD (video on demand) service that should be debuting soon. … Read entire article »

Russo Zombies or Romero Zombies?
I’m probably going to lose some zombie street cred for stating this, but I managed to see Return of the Living Dead for the first time ever this past weekend. Mind you, I knew all about the movie growing up. I remember when I was at summer camp and being told (in stifled giggles) about the naked cemetery dance scene. I remember seeing the clip with the sill moving zombie arm when it fell out of a garbage bag. And I knew it was this movie that gave zombies their lust for brains, so the while the movie itself wasn’t too revealing (har har har), it did give me a glimpse of a different kind of zombie. The Russo zombie. Here goes some more street … Read entire article »

Dawn of the Living Dead?
Did you notice that Romero’s first film was titled Night of the Living Dead and his followup zombie film was titled Dawn of the Dead. Following logic, the next movie should have been titled Dawn of the Living Dead? Instead, every movie since Night of the Living Dead the moniker “living dead” has been dropped from all Romero films. There’s actually a good reason for this, and his name is John Russo. When George Romero directed Night of the Living Dead, he worked with several collaborators. Each one paid five hundred bucks to finance the film. One such collaborator was John Russo who actually co-wrote the script with Romero. Like all shaky partnerships, Russo and Romero found themselves at odds with one another after the … Read entire article »

Romero Talks About Zombies
In this older interview, Romero talks up his latest film. He goes into the history of his zombies, noting that the word zombie didn’t appear in his work until Dawn of the Dead. He seems to be having a great time with this latest release although he seems somewhat subdued in this interview. I gotta say he looks a little strange without his glasses. But enough about hype. We need a good old fashioned release date. George A Romero talks about premiering Survival of the Dead (youtube.com … Read entire article »

Zombie Command Reviews Survival of the Dead
ZC Barry over at Zombie Command managed to get an early look at the Survival of the Dead and posted a full on review without spoilers. Long story short, it gets a hardy recommendation. It is his first Romero recommendation in the past twenty years. That being said, ZC Barry informs readers not to expect old school Romero. Here’s a pretty telling paragraph: That said, beware that Romero does move his zombie world forward and the zombies are smarter than they have been before. They are able to ride horses, post mail and are much less dangerous than previously; it’s almost as if Romero himself doesn’t take the genre seriously but forgets that without the backdrop of his films then parodies are much less likely to work. New Survival of the Dead Trailer
A new trailer for Romero’s Survival of the Dead has appeared online. It’s incomplete, missing both credits as well as featuring some timecode on the bottom of it, but it looks pretty solid. When George Romero was asked his favorite zombie death, he mentioned the one involving a fire extinguisher. In this clip, you can see in its full glory. Looks to be wild ride with plenty of murder and mayhem to keep us entertained. New Romero trailer: inventive zombie deaths aplenty (indiemoviesonline.com … Read entire article »

George Romero on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me
Many thanks for Tim Stamschror for pointing me in the direction. George Romero recently appeared on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me whereby he discusses the evolution of the zombie throughout the years. He also talk about his first job as a media professional. You’ll never believe who gave him his first gig. Just a hint. His catchphrase was “it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood”. I guess that was before the neighborhood was overrun flesh eating corpses. This is a fun listen and George manages to hold his own on the show. Check it out. It’s free to listen. Botched Survival of the Dead Screening Gives Audience Real Taste of Post Apocalyptic Dischord
In what can be categorized as pooch screwing on steroids, the Brenden Theatres managed to botch up the screening of George Romero’s Surival of Dead, pissing of a throng of angry zombies while also embarassing zombie legend George Romero. Here’s the scoop from Stephanie … Went to this and waited an hour before Brendan theater employees canceled it. It boiled down to them not having anyone competent enough to transfer the film to another projector or change the faulty lightbulb. So yeah, The Palms is a joke. Hopefully they manage to play it tomorrow as promised. Absolutely no compensation was offered to the hundred or so people left waiting. Wow … I think I would have eaten some brains after that. In any case, if you live in Vegas and want … Read entire article »
