Friday the 13th

Today is a special kind of day. Oh yes, today is my daughter’s birthday. Okay, maybe it’s not just my daughter’s birthday, but it is also Friday the 13th. That’s right, make sure your brakes are working or the office building’s elevator has been checked, because if something is going to happen, it’s going to happen today. Or maybe not. In any case, The Huffington Post is running a quick photo journal of Friday the 13th superstitions. Just a quick correction for the article. It mentions that the thirteenth tarot card is the Death card. Don’t ask me how I know this, but the Death card is not a bad card since it signifies an important change. It’s the Devil card … Read entire article »

Zombies Take Over Mississippi State University

Thanks Jamie for the scoop. This just in. Students at Mississippi State University woke up to find the campus flooded with zombies. Or to put it another, students at Mississippi State University woke up to a normal day. I kid, of course. This article is about a bunch of students organizing a zombie walk whereby the writer, as all zombie reporters seem to do these days, tries to explore the reasoning behind all the recent zombie love. But I got to say, out of all the zombie news articles that I’ve ever read, I think this one nails it: “I think America’s obsessed with zombies for the same reason ‘Twilight’ fanatics are obsessed with vampires; no one knows. There’s no logical reason; they just are,” Vanlandingham said. Go figure … Read entire article »

WTF? Seattle is the Zombie Captial of the World?

Absolute insanity. Did I have one too many beers this summer, pass out, and wake up in the Twilight Zone? I can’t believe I missed this story. Over the summer, the great city of Seattle managed to organize the largest zombie walk the word has ever seen. According to the article over four thousand zombies showed up for this. That’s like calling Libya the capital of baseball. Every zombie lover knows that Pittsburgh is the rightful heir to the throne. We got to get the Monroeville Zombie Walkers on the horn and do a little organizing. There is no way Seattle keeps this prize. Next year, we got to take it back. One rotten festering corpse at a time. If not for us, … Read entire article »

Zombies Invade Leeds Train Station

Imagine working a full hard day only to step off the subway and be devoured by the restless dead. This actually happened (minus the devouring bit) at Leeds station in London this past weekend. There evidently was film festival and a bunch of zombies decided to attend. No one knows what caused the outbreak, but if you’re interested in discovering the answer, there are a bunch animated corpses still wandering the blood spattered halls with the answer congealed in their rotting veins. From the article: Weekend travellers and early morning shoppers came face-to-face with the undead this weekend an army of Zombies invaded Leeds train station. The army of darkness travelled to Leeds from across the Northern Rail network to enjoy a special horror movie celebration called Day of the … Read entire article »

Zombie Walking UK Style

Kotaku is running a little story about a zombie walk that took place over the weekend to celebrate the upcoming Resident Evil. They’ve included some nice blood spattered images that gave me a chuckle. By the looks of the photos, it looks like the zombies did a nice job indeed. Capcom Zombies Invade London (kotaku.com … Read entire article »

Soo Zombie Walk Winner

Mark from Primavera Photography just wrote to me to let me know that the Soo Zombie Walk has now elected a winner. Alas, my hockey zombie didn’t make the cut, but there was a field of worthy contenders. The winner definitely deserved to win. Hats off again to the Soo Zombie Walk for doing this and if you are out there organizing your own zombie walk, you should definitely follow suit. It keeps the zombies interested long after the survivalists have shot them dead. Soo Zombie Walk & Trick or Eat Food Drive (ssmarts.org … Read entire article »

Soo Zombie Walk Followup: Vote for Your Favorite Flesh Eater

Some time last week, I covered the Soo Zombie Walk that took place last weekend in Canada. Well, now they are doing something quite original that I wish all zombie walks did … voting for your favorite zombie. It’s great to peruse the gallery of the walking dead, then see how people voted. My poor zombie had only two percent at the time of voting, but who knows, maybe he’ll pull ahead in the coming day. In any case, props go out to Mark Primavera of Primavera Photography for implementing this very original idea. He’s going to get in touch with the winner. Zombie Voting (ssmarts.org … Read entire article »

When Good Zombies Go Bad

Some times even the most well planned zombie walk can go horrifying wrong. In this case, a bunch of zombies got a little too exuberant and managed to drench a Denver mall in blood. Fake blood, mind you, but blood nonetheless. Oh, how I wished I could have seen the red sopping hallways. Well, it looks like the mall’s management was not impressed and decided to classify the blood as graffiti, then sent a thousand dollar bill to the zombie walk organizers for the cost of the cleanup. I think we can agree that its an understandable charge, although the mall didn’t contact the organizers to assist (probably for legal reasons). They just sent a bill which kind of sucks. But there is … Read entire article »

Soo Zombie Walk

God, I love zombie walks.  I can stare at the pictures for hours, chuckling to myself like kid who has discovered the funny pages for the first time.  One question, though.  Of all the zombie walks I have seen, Mario is never far behind.  No joke.  Mario from the famed Super Mario Brothers likes to hang out with the dead. In any case, this zombie walk took place in Canada recently.  I think my favorite thing about this zombie walk is the camouflaged survivalists who turned up.  One of these days, some dude with a few screws loose will bring a real gun, and then we will get to see a real zombie apocalypse.   Until then, we can only imagine. Did a zombie eat your brain? (sootoday.com … Read entire article »

Zombiethon – Running for Brains

As if the whole slow zombie verse fast zombie debate didn’t need any more fuel to tossed on the fire. Where we had zombie walks for the slow zombies, we now have zombiethon’s for the fast ones. Actually, I think it’s a pretty clever idea. If you live in the LA region, you should definitely swing over to the Silver Lake area. If you’re a Romero type zombie, don’t worry, they take walkers as well. What I don’t know is the actual length of the race. Here’s what I gleaned from their site: Zombiethon is a community FUN run/walk event held on Halloween, Saturday October 31, 2009, from 4-6pm, along the recreation trail around Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles, California. This event is organized … Read entire article »

The Ultimate Zombie Walk: The Monroeville Mall

You might remember the Monroeville Mall … it was the place where Romero’s survivors took shelter in the iconic Dawn of the Dead. Conventional wisdom would have you think that the mall was probably torn down ages ago, but it still stands. In fact, the original JC Penny is still open. How’s that for retail legs. Naturally, the town of Monroeville has got a pretty enthused zombie community. The city is, after all, ground zero of the zombie apocalypse. So for the past few years, they have been paying tribute to the Romero film by doing a zombie walk in the mall. How friggin cool. The Wall Street Journal covers wrote a little piece on it, but I gotta say, I’m there next year. … Read entire article »

Richmond Zombie Walk — T Minus 4 Days and Counting

Thanks to Jamie for grabbing this intel. If you live on the East Coast and you are feeling the need to walk with the zombies, this Saturday, Richmond is holding its annual zombie walk. This zombie walk has been happening for the past four years, it appears to be organizing itself nicely into an annual community event that benefits people. From the article: There are Zombie Girl Scouts, Zombie Housewives, Zombie Policemen, even Zombie Pets toddling along at the end of blood-stained leashes. Last year, Zombie Sarah Palin lurched by, still smiling, while Jesus glided along peacefully a few minutes later. They didn’t seem to be together. Organizers Anthony Menez and Josh Bishop, who took over the event in 2006, have seen the undead legions grow from 80-90 the … Read entire article »

Crackle’s Zombiefest Going Strong

Two weeks closer to Halloween and Crackle continues with their zombie onslaught. If you haven’t checked out this site, do yourself a favor and head on over there. They are providing a ton of zombie movies for free. From classics such as Night of the Creeps to the downright bizarre, Die You Zombie Bastards and of course, the original web series, Woke Up Dead, starring Val Kilmer’s lost twin, Napeleon Dynamite. Er, Jon Heder. What you might have missed is the compendium blog they have running alongside the zombiefest. They pose questions such as “Was Frankenstein’s monster really just a zombie?” and funny introspections into the all time classic zombie film that makes you want to ram your head into a television set, The … Read entire article »

Zombies Ruined the Economy

And here you thought it was the subprime mess combined with the credit crunch that tanked the economy. Nope. It was zombies. No … not the kind that drag you out of your car and tear you apart limb from limb, but the people who participate in zombie walks. From the article: “This is why our economy” is in the tank, said an unsmiling Frank Palizzolo, waiting for a haircut and clearly disgusted by the unholy parade passing by. “People have nothing better to do than this, walking around like [jerks]? Why don’t they get jobs?” Palizzolo’s real language was considerably saltier, and he clearly had no time for such shenanigans. But the zombies didn’t care. There was still more lurching to be done, more brains to be … Read entire article »
