Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide – Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things

This past Christmas, my brother in law (who sometimes plays the hunter punter role in Left 4 Dead) gave me this awesome book called Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide by Glenn Kay. This is a complete comprehensive guide for all the different kinds of zombie films that have managed to grace the screen in the past hundred years. It details the biggies like Night of the Living Dead and Return of the Living Dead, but it’s the small lesser known “I can’t believe anyone took the time make this” kind of zombie movie that gets my attention. Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things, a zombie film made in the seventies, is one such picture. Here’s what author Glenn Kay has to say about it: … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode Six

The capsule twisted to the side with a sudden jerk. Reilly dangled off the side of his chair. The shoulder straps chaffed his shoulders and as he tried to right himself, he was jerked in the opposite direction. The floor bucked and for just a second, Reilly thought the capsule’s chute had snapped. “It’s the winds,” Chapel shouted. “We’re falling into a storm.” “Is there anything you can do?” Reilly yelled as the capsule jerked again. “We need power to stabilize and fire the retros,” Chapel yelled back. “If we make it through the winds and the retros don’t fire before we land-” … Read entire article »

More Info About the Zombie Combat Manual

I’ve received a lot of emails the other day about the upcoming Zombie Combat Manual, so I thought I’d do another post to share my findings. The book is based on the existing website, Zombie Combat Club and it is a fun read. There are a ton a instructional how-to articles on how to evade, and ultimately, take down the dead. Each example is well written with some great artwork drawn alongside of it. The website also goes into detailed weapon descriptions, including some videos, But hey, don’t take it, check it out. I’m guess the book will match the overall tone of the book. Here’s a cook snippet from the site: … Read entire article »

The Zombie Combat Manual

As we know, the walking dead can pose quite a problem to the walking digestible so it’s good to know how to defend yourself. Some might argue that it would be smart to learn to defend yourself regardless of the dead or not and some might even further argue, that one should never leave the house without a good old fashioned twelve gauge, but I’ll defer argument on that one for now. The Zombie Combat Manual aims to fill in the empty spaces from Max Brooks, giving praticial instructions on how maim and kill your undead neighbors. The key point is that this is a hand to hand manual. From the description: … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode Five

All of Reilly’s anger and frustration dissipated in but breath as the words ran through his mind without the Russian accent to confuse or distort. We were ejected on purpose. “Borsh, If there was a manually activated ejection, then Grabo’s pod would at least be with us. I can’t imagine her waking up only to eject us onto an alien world so she could starve to death on the journey back home.” “I don’t understand it,” Borsh said. “I’ve rechecked the logs and everything indicates a manual ejection.” … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode Four

Borsh stopped his typing as he mulled over Reilly’s words. He stared at Chapel, then Reilly. Both men were lost in alien purple sky in front of them as the capsule plunged through the air. Borsh shrugged and returned to his typing. “Why did I wake up last?” Reilly asked with eyes trained on Chapel’s back. He watched the pilot squirm in his chair. He was never good at concealing his feelings. It was both a source of strength and weakness although Reilly couldn’t decided which. Chapel continued to stare out window while Borsh hammered on the keys. Although the cabin was cool, Reilly felt the tips of his ears to start to grow hot. … Read entire article »

Is Max Brooks Wearing Out His Welcome?

When discussing zombies with other zombie lovers, Max Brooks somehow sneaks into the conversation. I always seem to get the question, “what did you think of the Zombie Survival Guide?” to which I answer, “I haven’t read it.” As you can imagine, this produces a lot of reactions which the two most common being: You call yourself a zombie fan? I’m not a big fan of these conversations as being I must prove that reading The Zombie Survival Guide is not synonymous with being a zombie fan. I get this a lot with zombies movies as well. It is like there is an invisible checklist that each person must complete in order to be card carrying member of the fan club. When prodded on why I haven’t … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode Three

The three men sat in silence. Each kept their eyes forward, watching the silent orange flame wash over the exterior of the ship. The power flickered on and off, then stabilized. Chapel sneered as he clasped onto the stick with white fingertips. The flames flickered around the nose of the craft, then vanished, revealing a deep purple alien sky before them. The men exhaled in concert, punctuated by with a whispered “shit” from Chapel that sounded more like a prayer of thanks. … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode Two

The metal floor sent chills through Reilly’s bare feet, but he didn’t even register the sensation. Seeing the orange glow envelope the cabin filled Reilly’s mind with a silent scream. The ship isn’t reentry rated. The ship rattled hard. Reilly grabbed on his pod’s wall as his feet flew out from under him. “Strap yourself in or get the hell back in your pod,” Chapel barked. “I don’t have time to squeegee you off the cockpit.” Chapel wrestled with the controls, trying to keep the ship centered through the holographic brackets that overlayed the cockpit. He wore only his standard issue hibernation pajama pants. The electronic leads dangled from his chest from where he ripped them out of the wall instead of detaching them. Borsh sat next to … Read entire article »

Cold Storage (A Scifi-Zombie Potboiler) — Episode One

The air went cold with a loud hiss as Reilly’s serenity froze then shattered like a glass thrown against a cement wall. Hinges squealed metallic pain, billowing cold air into his private space and flooding the silence with the screaming of bells. The small pod door raised, then slid back. The ship’s cabin was bathed in a red light as if serial killer had taken a machete to the rest of the crew. Reilly squinted hard as the cabin blurred in and out of focus. The fog of sleep gripped the sides of his temples, pressing hard – all the time pressing – like fingers of the damned trying to reach into his skull. The alarm made his ears swell. He cupped them … Read entire article »

Life with the Undead

There’s no better time in history to be a zombie fan. Right now, there is a ton of content being produced about the undead on a daily basis and while a lot of content can be just looked over, there are some real gems in the rough. Introducing the blog known as Life with the Undead. The idea behind this blog isn’t entirely new. It aims to be a journal of one man’s experience in the midst of a full blooded zombie apocalypse. The difference between this blog and the hundreds of other similar blogs are but two things. One … it is actively maintained. Two … it is good. I can’t tell you how many story blogs I have read where the author disappeared without … Read entire article »

Interview with Zombie Author Eric S. Brown

This was recently posted on Permuted Press’ twitter feed. Prolific author Eric S. Brown gave an interview to the Horror Fiction Review. He talks at length about his zombie fiction, the process of writing, and how managed to endure hundreds of rejections to get where he is today. The fella has over three hundred short stories published which in a word is impressive. Here’s what he has to say about his future plans: As I mention above, I really in my heart of hearts want to return to my undead and rotting roots this year and write a zombie novel Joe R. Lansdale style that will leave people saying “What the. . .?” and live up to the action, gore, and hopelessness of Season of Rot. I also have … Read entire article »

io9 Talks Day of the Triffids

Any fan of post-apocalyptic zombie literature should pick up a copy of John Wyndham’s book, Day of the Triffids. This is a wonderful book that has all the ingredients of a good zombie fiction – mass chaos, civil unrest, and of course, people being munched. This book was written in 1951 when zombies hung out in Haitian plantations instead of American malls so one can argue that this is the first incarnation of zombie fiction even though there are no zombies in it. The Day of the Triffids starts with a strange meteor shower that illuminates the sky with a fourth of July merriment. The following day, everyone who witnessed the display wakes up blind. That’s when the trouble starts. … Read entire article »

Zombie Haikus

This is definitely the most random thing that I have seen today. This youtube video is actually a promotional video for a book of zombie poetry. That is correct. Somewhere out there, there is a great neglected cross divide between the poets and the zombie lovers. This book is for them. Haikus about eating mothers. Haikus about eating liver. Haikus about eating each other. … Read entire article »

NPR Reccommends The Zombie Survival Guide

With Christmas just shy of twenty four hours away, there still is time to get that special gift for the zombie lover in the family. If you have need any advice, NPR proudly recommends Max Brooks’ uber hit, The Zombie Survival Guide I love that the author of this writeup approaches the material in the same way a grad student approaches his thesis. And I’ve got to say, Max Brooks makes a number of excellent points. For example, when fleeing zombies, Brooks advises against using a sedan. Instead, he suggests using an armored car. Even if you break down or run out of gas, you’re still sitting pretty in a nice little fortress. I never thought of that. Brooks also scoffs at my notion of using a heavy machine gun, pointing out — … Read entire article »
