Winner of the Decade: Zombies!
This is an older article that was published just before New Years of last year, but I still find it enjoyable. The author goes through the movies of the past decade, declaring both decade-wide winners and losers. Zombies, of course, got a big gold star (which I liked). From serious zombie horror in “Dawn of the Dead” to not-so serious zombie horror in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Zombieland” to horror that featured pseudo-zombies in “28 Days Later”/”28 Weeks Later,” zombies were the kings of the good horror movies these past 10 years. They even made it to the bookshelves with the widely successful “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” which will have its own adaptation on screen starring Natalie Portman. … Read entire article »

Terminal Gamer’s Ultimate Zombie List
Geoffrey Calver, founder and writer of the video game blog, Terminal Gamer, has put together a list of all the “must see, play, or experience” things about the zombie genre. This isn’t your typical top-ten type list as it spreads across multiple genres, but its heart is in the right place … a zombie’s mouth. On my first read of the list, the only thing going through my head was Night of the Living Dead and seeing in its proper place, I managed to give it a nice and thorough review. It was nice to see oft unmentioned zombie properties such as Doom 3, The Evil Dead, and Dead Rising. Zombie purists might hold a hissy fit seeing 28 Days Later on the list, but personally, I consider … Read entire article »

io9′s 10 Tips for Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse
When all the vacancies in hell fill up (as you know they will) and the dead start to rise, you can never have too much information on how to deal with those pesky hungry corpses. Some time back, io9 decided to consult with the The Green Light Anti-Zombie Squad (they have mysteriously disappeared since the publishing of the io9 article … conspiracy?) to provide a list of tips to help survive the eventual zombie apocalypse. This is probably my favorite tip of the bunch: It’s bad enough that you have to deal with the zombified masses, who are tireless, feel no pain, and greatly outnumber healthy human beings. … Read entire article »

Are Zombie Lovers Becoming the Thing They Love?
Jamie sent me a link to this blog. The author appears to have gotten irritated with all the zombie love lately. Actually, I shouldn’t write lately since the blog post is dated back to last year, but it is still very much applicable. In short, he states that people are becoming the very thing that they admire by blinding consuming anything zombie related without thought. First he starts off with this nugget: Ask a group of geeks to go protest in the streets in favor of human rights, peace, or even privacy issues, and they’ll decline. For them, the best form of organized protest is an ineffective and totally made-up boycott. … Read entire article »

Top Five Mistakes Defending Against a Zombie Horde
Let’s face it, when the zombie apocalypse happens, it isn’t going to be pretty. There’s going to be a lot of newbie mistakes out there so I thought I compile a list of the five ones that will get you killed. Not Checking for Bite Marks The zombies have invaded! You and a friend manage to slash your way through scores of rotting bodies to find a formidable shelter. Your friend, looking pale and covered with blood, denies that he has been bitten. “Just a bad bit of cabbage for lunch today,” he responds. Uh-huh. You might as well cut open your own head and give him your brain. Chances are, he got nibbled in the melee. Modesty be damned, it’s time to do a little stripping and searching. … Read entire article »

Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse with a Blu Ray Player
After heaps and heaps of stuffing, gravy saturated turkey, and a large period of time in suspended animation, it’s time to talk about zombies. CNET has a pretty neat article about how survive the article through the use of consumer electronic devices. Just remember when reading this article that this is all theory. When the zombies do come after you, I’d say ditch the Palm Pre and find yourself a good old fashioned pick axe. That is, unless you want to make a phone call while being eaten alive. … Read entire article »

Zombies and Social Upheavel
Whenever some zombie writer or zombie film director is interviewed, they are always asked the same unanswerable question, “why are zombies so popular?”. No matter who answers the question, the response always sounds the same. It’s some vague theory relating to people being afraid of something apocalyptic. Well, science fiction website io9 decided to examine the question in a different light. Granted, this article is a year old, but the results are somewhat interesting. They charted the release of zombie films, and compared them against a historical backdrop. … Read entire article »

How Zombies Work
The folks over at How Stuff Works decided to take a little time out of their day and investigate zombies. You’d think they’d approach the topic with their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, but the article itself is surprisingly thorough. It covers the origin of the word itself, then shows how zombies rose through culture to be the force that they are today. At the end of the article, the author just couldn’t resist the urge to give survival tips. Her “common mistakes to avoid” list is pretty funny, containing such gems as “avoid teaching zombies to use firearms”. Good stuff. How Zombies Work (howstuffworks.com … Read entire article »

Russo Zombies or Romero Zombies?
I’m probably going to lose some zombie street cred for stating this, but I managed to see Return of the Living Dead for the first time ever this past weekend. Mind you, I knew all about the movie growing up. I remember when I was at summer camp and being told (in stifled giggles) about the naked cemetery dance scene. I remember seeing the clip with the sill moving zombie arm when it fell out of a garbage bag. And I knew it was this movie that gave zombies their lust for brains, so the while the movie itself wasn’t too revealing (har har har), it did give me a glimpse of a different kind of zombie. The Russo zombie. Here goes some more street … Read entire article »

Goozlepipe’s Top Twenty Six Zombies of All Time
Another day. Another “top ten” list. This one comes from movie review site, Goozlepipe.com that lists its favorite zombies. It’s a fairly uncontroversial list although I would have ranked the cemetery zombie from Night of the Living Dead higher in the rankings. Also I would have just stuck with movies instead of bringing video games into the mix. Still, it’s good read. 26+ Best Zombies of All Time (goolzepipe.com … Read entire article »

Top Five Reasons Why Becoming a Zombie is a GOOD Thing
We’ve seen all the zombie movies. Some poor fool holds out against a horde of flesh eaters when he is stricken by a zombie bite. There’s a lot of wailing as the dude realizes that there isn’t much living left to do. This, of course, is purely half-empty kind of thinking. Just because you die doesn’t mean you’ll have no life. As a zombie, a whole new world opportunity is opened to you. Here’s my top five reasons why becoming a zombie is a GOOD thing. 1) No More Cooking. No More DIshes. Cooking can be a time intensive activity. Once you finish a meal, then you have dishes to do. By the time the dishes are done, the night is … Read entire article »

14 Ways to Kill a Zombie
Moviefill is running an article describing the fourteen “badass” ways of killing a zombie. I was kind of hoping they’d go out on a limb like dropping cars on zombies or preforming rapid depressurization. But, this article runs the standard methods … chainsaws … lawnmowers … supermodels. Each example is accompanied by a particular clip. I’m there are better methods out there. Off the top of my head, Romero’s fire extinguisher comes to mind. 4 Most Badass Ways to Kill a Zombie (moviefill.com … Read entire article »

Zombie Excercise Regime
People get in shape for a variety of reasons, but this is the time I’ve read about a fitness class designed to get in shape for a zombie apocalypse. No joke. The instructor is a former air force personal trainer who seems to relish both pain and zombies. Here’s a little excerpt: Class instructor Sarah Bright boasted credentials that would instill peace of mind in even the most skeptical Z-Day trainee: She spent four years as a personal trainer at Air Force bases across Germany and is clearly up on her zombie news. “I read the Zombie Survival Guide and learned that your number one tool is a fit body,” she said. “There aren’t gonna be people to help you if you’re running around screaming in high heels. … Read entire article »

Max Brooks Chat
World War Z author and zombie survivalist Max Brooks did a chat this past weekend at the Washington Post. He answered a lot of questions, pimped his new books, and revealed that his current project is not zombie related. It’s a pretty fun with some great snarky responses. This is one of my favorite moments of the dialogue: Arlington, Va.: Clearly most of us will need to engage in combat with the undead at some point in time, but is there any hard evidence to suggest that there are more of these incidents near Halloween? Or is it just something we hear more about even though the numbers are actually fairly steady throughout the year? Max Brooks: Halloween is a very dangerous time, not for zombie attacks, but for … Read entire article »

Anxieties of the Dead
Do you have some time to spare and wish to delve into the mysteries of Hatian zombies? Mind you, these zombies are not the flesh eating monsters that pre-occupy our attention here, but rather half-dead / half-alive people who are enslaved in a emotionless life of servitude (sounds like my job). Popular blogging site Boing Boing is linking to a pretty powerful story of a mother who desperately tries to recover her daughter after she has been zombified. Here’s a synopsis from Boing Boing: It is incredible. Even if you are familiar with Wade Davis, or have read The Serpent and the Rainbow, or seen the mediocre movie, Berlinski’s story is still incredible. In addition to the background on how zombies may or may not be created, … Read entire article »
