Metro 2033 Delivers Thrills and Chills

Metro 2033For all you fans of post-apocalyptic action in the wild irradiated ruins of a nuclear war, you’ll be happy be to know that you DON’T have to wait for the next Fallout game, and can instead pick up Metro 2033 right now. This game takes place in the desolate subways of Moscow after a nuclear war which from what I can infer is somewhat different from the desolate subways in Moscow before a nuclear war. I kid of course. But the game sounds pretty cool.

Having not played it, what I do like about the game is the concept that bullets are used as currency. This just sounds awesome and realistic. As much as I loved Fallout 3, I thought the idea of people using bottlecaps for currency was just retarded. People would barter for goods, or things of immediate value. Bullets makes sense because bullets would be a finite resource in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and thus, raise in value with years. Bottlecaps make no sense since they have no intrinsic value besides an agreed upon value by society and since society wouldn’t well be organized to make such an agreement, they would be useless pieces of metal.

Anyways, here’s a snippet about the game:

Based on a novel by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, the story-heavy Metro 2033 is set in a post-apocalyptic Moscow, 20 years after a world war in 2013. Much of the action takes place in dark subway tunnels, which have served as home for thousands of survivors. As Artyom, who was raised underground, you’ll venture to the toxic surface by donning a gas mask and welding weapons to ward off mutant assaults.

In underground safe zones, you can also buy new weapons and upgrades to existing weapons.

As we learn early in the game, the biggest threat to the Metro survivors are called “Dark Ones,” a new breed of mutants with psychic powers, capable of killing humans from a distance.

While not on the same level as Sony’s Heavy Rain or EA’s Mass Effect 2, this game constantly evaluates decisions you make, which can affect the ending of the sci-fi story.

Sounds pretty awesome. Sign me up.

  1. What platform is this out for?

  2. Strife says:

360 or PC, it seems. Sadly, this means that I won’t be playing it.

  3. FatalKitty says:

Your argument against bottlecaps assumes that our current currency system has intrinsic value – it does not. Value is assigned based on perceived value – what’s it work… need some bread? oh a few bottle caps should do it, I can use those to buy myself that much needed gear I can use to get my water pump working.
