Are We in a Zombie Renaissance?

Zombie ManCory over at the Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse wrote an excellent editorial about the current state of zombie-dom. He notes that we have seen more zombie movies made in the past ten years then all the zombie movies ever made.

Here’s his thoughts on the subject:

In addition to the incredible variety of zombie types and zombie media that’s emerged in that time span, something else no less impressive and important to the zombie’s place in the pop culture pantheon has happened: zombies have been embraced by the mainstream. From the Resident Evil and 28 Days Later films of the early part of the decade to last year’s hugely successful Zombieland, zombies are now arguably the most popular monster in entertainment (only vampires can make a significant counter case for dominance). As a result, we’re getting more and more zombie material than ever before. While much of this is shitty cash-in garbage, we’re also getting a chance to see Robert Kirkman’s excellent Walking Dead series adapted for television and a slew of excellent material in other expensive, exclusive media, from two top-notch Left 4 Dead games to deluxe Blu-ray releases of classic zombie films. And just about every decent-sized city in the Western world seems to have a zombie walk every year.

While the truly pedantic might argue that films such as 28 Days Later are not really zombie movies since they feature rage infected people as opposed to zombies. I’m not a fan of that argument. These movies share all the traits of zombie movies and while technically the antagonists are not the walking dead, they practically behave as the dead.

So, yes, there are a lot of zombie movies. The real question … has there been any quality munching movies that will stand the test of time? Have there been a lot of standard bearing zombie films that not only get your blood boiling, but also, create new fans of the genre?

Personally, I think Shaun of the Dead will be the film long remembered as being poster child for this time with 28 Days Later in close second. Alas, my underdog favorite Dead Meat will probably be lost to the sands of time. Other than that, the field is wide open. What do you think will be featured in the zombie Smithsonian?

  1. Very cool article.

For the record, I consider 28 Days Later a zombie movie as well, but I always feel like I need to elaborate by telling people that while it IS a zombie movie, the zombies are NOT undead, which is why it’s ok with me that they can run, but NOT ok with me that the zombies ran in the remake of Dawn of the Dead…I still loved Dawn of the Dead, I just think that running undead creatures is cheating. :p

  2. thats cause they have MONEY now.
