Zombieland 2 … in Three Dimensions

Zombieland 23D technology has been with us since the golden age of radio, but by following the entertainment media, you’d think it was just invented in some crazy lab accident. Everything these days is slated for 3D production. 3D televisions are starting to trickle into the marketplace, and in twenty years from now, 3D should be firmly entrenched in .

Here’s the thing … it’s just not all that exciting. The first 3D movie that I saw was The House of Wax starring Vincent Price. A local theater was doing a revival so my folks took the entire family to see good old Vincent turn a little psychotic and kill a bunch of people. We were given the blue and red glasses and while it was a fun experience, but it didn’t do anything for the movie except make me laugh whenever anything flew at the camera

Flash forward to a month when I went to see Avatar. I found the 3D experience to be both pretty cool at first but it quickly “forgot” about it as the film progressed. By the end of the movie, my eyes felt tired and the top of nose was sore from the 3D glasses over my regular glasses. In short, the 2D experience would have been a better one for me.

In a couple of years, I’m guessing a few smart filmmakers will really utilize the technology to tell better stories, but for now, it feels like a gimmick just like it did when I saw Vincent go nuts with the wax machine. I’m argue executives see 3D movies translate into higher ticket prices, thus more profit. Nothing is wrong with making money … just do me a favor and tell a good story in the process.

Does 3D movies do it for you? Would you rather see a movie in 3D versus in 2D? Do you mind paying more money for 3D movies? What do you think?

  1. I actually AVOID 3D movies. My eyes are weird. The 3D glasses make them water and give me a headache. And I agree with you about the gimmick aspect. Nightmare on Elm Street 6 was so obviously just an excuse to make that really “cool” end scene where Maggie puts the glasses on…

    1. hahahaha … I forgot all about Nightmare in Elm Street being in 3D! Bring on the cheese!

      1. Ultracheese. I was SOOO excited when it came out, but my parents wouldn’t take me to see it in theaters. :p

My wife gets migraines from 3-D movies, and I myself am still wondering if this isn’t just another momentary upsurge of 3-D movies which will die out just like the previous two surges in the 60′s and the 80′s. It seems like it takes about twenty years for everyone to forget what a silly idea it is.

My Bloody Valentine 3-D was pretty sweet.
