FearNet’s Seven Essential George Romero Films Without Zombies

KnightridersBelieve it or not, although George Romero has become synonymous with zombie films, he actually has directed several other movies that have nothing to do with zombies. FearNet has compiled a list of the seven Romero films that are worth watching.

I will say my favorite Romero non-zombie film but is actually a zombie film is The Crazies (which is on the list). Sure, it’s getting a remake (what isn’t these days) which has garnered zero interest from me because the original film really tapped a vein about how people felt about the government. It’s a great film , indicative of its time. The seventies was the hangover after the peace movement when people became disillusioned with their government. Vietnam and Watergate were sucker punches to the gut of idealism and these types of movies reflect it.

If I ever became a film historian, that’s the period of my choice. It’s hard to believe but before audiences became addicted to the blockbuster, there were actual movies of substance that weren’t just released during Oscar season.

Where the hell was I going … oh yeah, Romero movies. Sad to say, but I’ve seen less than half of the movies on the list. Monkey Shines looked lame to me when it was released and the feeling has not changed. After reading The Dark Half, I wanted nothing to do with movie. I love Stephen King to death, but his books can be way too hit or miss for me. And Creepshow … I don’t know why I avoided it. Maybe it was because Tad Danson comes back as a zombie or that Stephen King acts in it, but I’ve avoided the movie for years on end.

Still, it’s a good list. Check it out and let me know what’s missing!
