Semi-Dead – Episode One – “If You Can’t Beat ‘Em … Eat ‘Em”
Surviving a zombie apocalypse is hard business, especially if you are in the business of trying to live a normal life. Introducing the new webseries, Semi-Dead. It’s a pretty clever take about a zombie apocalypse shared by two roommates who couldn’t be more different.
Chris still works an office job. The show opens with him staring at a clock and counting down the minutes for his shift to end. Mind you, the office is in tatters with bodies stuffed between cubes and blood spattered on windows, but Chris appears oblivious to it all.
You’d think he’d be eaten but his roommate Joe, a caring survivalist psychopath, does a good job at keeping the zombies at bay. Mind you, he isn’t a very good zombie killer as evidenced by the fact that their apartment is under a constant state of siege, but he manages to keep the both of them alive, so that counts for something.
There is a third roommate whom is kept in a closet. His back story is a prime of example of Chris’ divorced nature of reality. It’s pretty funny anecdote that made me laugh out loud. The poor guy just never learned that you don’t answer the door during an apocalypse.
This show deals with the ever shortening food problem which Joe eagerly steps up to solve. Yes, it’s nasty and yes, I couldn’t help but to both laugh and wince at the same time, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.
I gotta say, I really enjoy the humor in this show because it is so understated. It’s not a laugh out loud kind of funny, but the kind of humor that elicits a small chuckle which will stay with you for the rest of the day. There are three other shows in this series with more coming down the pipe. Let’s hope they are as good as this one.
Update: Reading this another time, I realize that I wrote the show isn’t laugh out loud funny, yet I laughed out loud.
