Weapon Madness – Round One – Ranged Weapon Contest: Spear vs Pump Action Shotgun
We’ve seemed to have entered a place of one sided matchups. As much as the torch could be used as a potentially dangerous zombie killing tool (and people killing as well), everyone decided to go with the baseball bat. I would have done the same although I don’t think my arms would hold up too well
With the next matchup, we have a spear versus a pump action shotgun. I think I can imagine how this contest will end, but can someone provide a situation where a spear would be better than the gun?
Spear
Pros: reusable, long distance throw, melee use as well
Cons: need strong arms, one shot wonder, hard to get the perfect kill
Pump Action Shotgun
Pros: kill one zombie with a shot, good melee use, quick reload
Cons: ammo might difficult to mind, sore arms, firing may attract zombies
Just a reminder about the judging. These are Romero type zombies. They are slow and sluggish. Headshots or decapitations will kill them. Bites will lead to probable infection, then death. You should judge a weapon based on its effectiveness against one zombie to an entire horde. A weapon does not need to be lethal to be effective. If it buys you some time to escape, then it should be looked on with favor.

I pick the spear, I know that the spear is light and can be used from a distance. It has the ability to double as a prying tool (kind of) and can be used as a makeshift crutch or walking stick when hiking tough terain. Like you said it is a silent weapon Its devastating when combined with a sheild (Spartan style) or you can toss it although odds are I wouldn’t. A group of untrained survivors would likely fair better with spears then shotguns, odds are they’d kill eachother with friendly fire.
The shotgun is much superior to a spear. Buck shot doesn’t get stuck in someone. Mind you, I’ve always been a pretty big fan of the spear, just for it’s limitless ability to kill zombies when you’ve got a barrier separating you. Spear + Strong chainlink fence = zombie corpse pile. However, range is god when fighting the undead, and the spear can’t beat a shotgun.
