Portrait of a Zombie

Portrait of a ZombieI got to say, the United Kingdom appears to be on the forefront of zombies lately. I’ve been seeing a whole bunch of zombie related material coming from the east side of the pond, and I’ve been impressed by the overall quality. First we had 28 Days Later that kicked started the zombie genre into high gear. There was the vastly underrated Dead Meat about Mad Cow disease turning people (and cows) into zombies. We have the new classic zombie film, Shaun of the Dead, and lately, I’ve been hooked into the antics of Miles, Tony and Hannah in the original webseries, Zomblogalypse. I guess if you can make good beer, you can make good zombie films.

Here comes a new zombie film which appears to lower the apocalypse levels, and amp up the psychological horror. At least that’s what I infer from watching the trailer. Movie review site Reel Pop recently interviewed the director of this upcoming munch fest. According to director Bing Bailey, the film is actually a fake documentary. From the article:

The film is really about how far a family will go to protect the children they love. They’ve been given a horrible situation “a zombie son” and they are trying to act as if nothing is wrong. They choose to care for and protect their son and they suffer terrible consequences inside and outside the family for their decisions. The film crew are also a family of sorts. The question is how long can they just be observers of an event before they are forced to become involved. The film mixes social satire, black comedy, and a serious horror tone. This is not just another survivalist zombie film, it is a family coping with a horrible disease. The film’s style is a hybrid between documentary and cinematic. It would be more consistent with District 9’s approach than say REC. Most of the film was shot hand-held but not shaky cam style.

Sounds pretty good. More as I have it.

Saw the teaser for this and I’m really looking forward to seeing it as it looks a little bit different! I have to correct you in a BIG way though. Both Dead Meat and this upcoming film Portrait of a Zombie are IRISH films and the Republic of Ireland is NOT in the United Kingdom. There was a pretty big war about it.
