Life with the Undead

Life with the UndeadThere’s no better time in history to be a zombie fan. Right now, there is a ton of content being produced about the undead on a daily basis and while a lot of content can be just looked over, there are some real gems in the rough.

Introducing the blog known as Life with the Undead. The idea behind this blog isn’t entirely new. It aims to be a journal of one man’s experience in the midst of a full blooded zombie apocalypse. The difference between this blog and the hundreds of other similar blogs are but two things. One … it is actively maintained. Two … it is good.

I can’t tell you how many story blogs I have read where the author disappeared without nary a word. Imagine getting hooked into the television show Lost only to find out the show just wasn’t played anymore without any reason provided.

The other problem with these blogs is that while the writers behind them aspire to tell a good zombie yarn, they lack the skills to do so. That’s not to say they won’t learn the skills to write a good story and hell, by posting daily, they are building up some writing muscle … it’s just I don’t want to apart of their creative learning process. I’ve done the classes. Got the t-shirt. I don’t want to do it again.

Life of the Undead is none of that. It is a refreshing read about the world going to hell one step at a time. I enjoy how the series starts with a small seemingly isolated event that becomes the first snowflake in what will soon be an unstoppable avalanche. We learn of a backwoods hick who kills himself while stringing Christmas lights only to come back from the dead. A week later, a father sends his son to band camp in Southern Florida which happens to be ground zero of the infection.

Like all zombie plagues, things go from bad to worse as the dead start to outnumber the living. From the blog:

It was late at night and they had set off a car alarm. I got up and looked out the bedroom window to see what was going on. At first it looked like a group of drunken college students stumbling down the road. In fact one of my neighbors opened their front door and yelled at them to “keep it down”. As the small group approached him, they emerged into the light of a street lamp.

Fortunately, I could not see much detail from where I was. I remember one of them appeared to be in red stained pajamas and another one had an odd bend in his left arm. Really it was my neighbor’s reaction that freaked me out the most. My neighbor got a good look at them. His jaw dropped, his skin went white and he immediately slammed the door. I went back to bed and held my wife close

Great stuff. Check it out.
