The Dead and Don Giovanni

Death Comes for Don GiovanniI bet you ten bucks that you probably never thought you’d ever read a post about opera on a zombie blog. If the word opera makes your fingers curl back, just take a deep breath because this clip is friggin awesome and yes, it features the dead.

I’ve been going through a Mozart kick lately. Not sure why, but I’ve been consuming his material like a starving man at an all-you-can-eat buffet. I managed to stumble into this YouTube clip of Don Giovanni which blew my socks off.

Let me state that I know crap about opera, Mozart, or this play. What I do know about Don Giovanni comes from the movie Amadeus and some background notes from Wikipedia so I’m not writing this with one pinky in the air and the other in a bowl of caviar.

In short, Don Giovonni has lived a life of excess and he is confronted with a death (I think) who demands that he repents his ways. Don being Don tells Death to suck it which of course is not a good thing to do even when moody Death is in a good mood.

Don Giovanni is dragged kicking and screaming into hell and that’s the awesome part of this production. The dead literally crawl out of the woodwork to take him down. It’s an awesome spectacle amplified by Giovanni’s death scream. Oh, this is stuff dreams are made of.

Check it out. For the impatient, skip to the nine minute mark. Make sure you are wearing headphones and soak up that sound.
