Weapons Madness – Round One – Grenade Launcher vs. Harpoon Gun (speargun)
Yesterday we had the first shutout of the competition. Although people respected the power of the sledgehammer, the versatility of the crowbar won the match hands down. Jenny liked the weapon because she didn’t need much upper body strength to use it whereas Jason enjoyed it so he could channel his inner Gordon Freeman.
So onto the next matchup … a grenade launcher versus a harpoon gun. The grenade launcher has the power while the harpoon gun has the subtlety. Which would you rather have when entering the apocalypse?
Grenade Launcher
Pros: Can take out a lot of zombies, easy to operate, adequate melee weapon
Cons: Useless up close, rare ammo, wasted power against single targets
Harpoon Gun
Pros: Easy kill, can potentially nail zombies to the wall, relatively silent
Cons: Specialized ammo, ineffective against hordes, slow reload
So which do you think will make for a better zombie killing weapon?

Both are a rear ammo, however harpoons are reusable… but grenades go BOOM! soooo, I choose grenade launcher. Don’t much care for wading through zombies to retrieve my harpoon before I can use it again.
Grenade launcher, it has major stopping power and if I had one I’d be smart enough to stock the ammo for it. the grenades aren’t very heavy and the launcher itself usually comes with a shoulder strap. Also as it is mentioned the grenade launcher would be a far better melee weapon and could easily break a zombies skull. Choosing this as a weapon wouldn’t be a very good choise.
Grenades wouldn’t be as effective as you’d think against zombies. The actual explosion is not what kills things, contrary to what TV would have you believe. They rely on shrapnel to induce massive flesh wounds, generally shredding multiple vital organs. The only problem is that massive flesh wounds don’t kill zombies. The chances of a piece of shrapnel hitting the brain are much lower than I consider acceptable. Still, the harpoon gun isn’t much better. Limited range with a slow reload isn’t exactly ideal here, especially with ammunition that is so difficult to carry. If these two are all I had available, it would come down to whichever one looked like it would make a better club. I would take a good ol’ shotgun over either. Ammunition is much more plentiful, it’ll be much more effective, and you can even use it for hunting.
