Are Zombie Lovers Becoming the Thing They Love?

Zombie LoversJamie sent me a link to this blog. The author appears to have gotten irritated with all the zombie love lately. Actually, I shouldn’t write lately since the blog post is dated back to last year, but it is still very much applicable. In short, he states that people are becoming the very thing that they admire by blinding consuming anything zombie related without thought. First he starts off with this nugget:

Ask a group of geeks to go protest in the streets in favor of human rights, peace, or even privacy issues, and they’ll decline. For them, the best form of organized protest is an ineffective and totally made-up boycott. However, ask the same people to show up somewhere dressed like zombies and they’ll not only heed this urgent call but make sure they put nothing less than 100% effort into it.

There have been many geek protests from those dudes who went nuts against Scientology or those other geeks that stormed some retailers to get their money back for being forced to buy Windows on their Linux machines. I think the point he is inadvertently making is that people will not organize and protest causes they don’t really care about.

He later goes on to say:

While zombies were once an element for biting social commentary against consumerism and blind acceptance, they have evolved into the poster monsters for consumerism and blind acceptance. In the comic book world, Marvel comics addressed the issue of its most die-hard fans being referred to as “Marvel zombies” by releasing Marvel Zombies, a comic series in which the standard superheroes are now animated maggot-ridden half-decayed corpses. Surprising nobody, the fans have eagerly purchased the original comics (there is now a third series in the making) as well as the vast array of associated merchandise. You might think that nobody in their right mind would want a $100 statue of zombie versions of Spider-Man and Mary Jane, but you would be wrong.

Personally, I think the author is a little full of it. People will buy the stuff they like whether it is zombie related or not. And just because I live zombies doesn’t mean I’ll buy every single zombie branded thing in the marketplace.

So what do you think? Are we zombie fans no different from the undead themselves?

I wouldn’t be too put out by that blog, it exists to skewer everything that geeks have (perceivedly) latched onto, and doesn’t do so gently. Zombies just happened to shamble into the crosshairs this time around.

You should see what he has to say about bacon.
