Zombies and Social Upheavel
Whenever some zombie writer or zombie film director is interviewed, they are always asked the same unanswerable question, “why are zombies so popular?”. No matter who answers the question, the response always sounds the same. It’s some vague theory relating to people being afraid of something apocalyptic.
Well, science fiction website io9 decided to examine the question in a different light. Granted, this article is a year old, but the results are somewhat interesting. They charted the release of zombie films, and compared them against a historical backdrop. There is one slight flaw in their argument. They juxtapose these films at the time of release instead of the time they were being made. This would move the chart back a couple of years since movies are a labor intensive process. The other thing that’s interesting is that we are full on in the middle of a zombie bubble. Just look at that chart – wow. The walking dead have really captured the hearts and souls of people (then, eaten them, of course).
