The Crow Reborn (again)
Do you know what happens when you pump out enough sequels that no one wants to watch them anymore? You “relaunch” the franchise so you can do it all over again. Introducing a new version of the Crow – a story about a guy who watches his girlfriend get gang-raped whereby he is murdered only to come back as a seriously pissed of spirit, killing almost everyone he meets. It’s a bloody tale for sure that made for a great albeit flawed film (Had the movie skipped the whole “fight the villain” ending, it would have been aces in my book).
The thing about the Crow … it doesn’t open itself for sequels. Once Eric dispatches his killers, his spirit goes to rest. The end. There might be other “crows”, but it’s an different story entirely which might make for an interesting series of vignettes, but vignettes don’t make money. Hollywood wants to tell the same story over and over again, but they can’t unless they “relaunch” the franchise with each sequel.
Who knows. This may be a good movie, but I’m getting so tired of seeing all my old favorites being reanimated as uninspired corpses. Also, note to anyone in Hollywood, there are millions of amazing stories out there that don’t involve toys or cartoons created in the eighties. I challenge you to find them.
