Justify This Movie: Land of the Dead

Land of the DeadBy all accounts, when Land of the Dead appeared in theaters in the summer of 2005, it was met with a warm reception from film critics. Michael Wilmington of Chicago Tribune awarded the film four stars, writing, “It’s another hard-edged, funny, playfully perverse and violent exercise in movie fear and loathing, with an increasingly dark take on a world spinning out of control.” (from Wikipedia). Yet the film received with a resounding meh from zombie fans. Maybe it was the twenty year gap between Romero’s original dead trilogy and the latest release, building up an enormous amount of hype that needed to be overcome. Or maybe Romero lost his touch. I’m not sure I have the reason, but I know don’t want to see this movie again. So to all you Land of the Dead lovers … why should new zombie fans, or even old ones alike, see this movie? What’s so good about it? Why should I give this movie a second chance?
